Our famous (and infamous) I-90 Floating Bridge takes locals and visitors from the Bellevue area, coined “the Eastside,” through the portal and into Seattle.
In the early years, when the region was growing, the population outgrew the ferries that had taken people across the waters. Their solution: a bridge. Since the 1920s, island residents were active in local happenings. One of those happenings, were gaining a bridge for easier access across the lake. Two bridges were subsequently built across Lake Washington, known as the Lacey V. Murrow Memorial Bridge, completed in 1940, and the Homer M. Hadley Memorial Bridge, completed in 1989.
After the second bridge was completed, the Lacey V. Murrow Bridge went under heavy renovations. Due to a judgement error a portion of the bridge sank in a Thanksgiving storm. After causing $69 million in damages, the “new” bridge was rebuilt in 1993.
Today, the I-90 bridges are an integral part of locals’ lives. They carry people from Seattle, to Mercer Island, to the Eastside, and through the passes. Cars can pass along, as well as walker, runners, and bikers, on the pedestrian spaces on the north side.
The reversible lanes are currently under construction, in preparation of the East Link segment our local light rail line for Sound Transit.
The I-90 bridges bring the interstate through Mercer Island in only the most beautiful way. Mercer Island, a city known for preservation of natural beauty, deployed creative feats on this project. Using a series of tunnels, I-90 finds its way from Seattle, across the East Channel Bridge.
The westernmost portion is the largest tunnel on Mercer Island, and rests below the West I-90 Lid Park and Aubrey Davis Park. The rest of the tunnel is surrounded by tall walls to deter traffic noise and tall and beautiful trees, creating a natural barrier between residences and travelers. Many other nature trails and green spaces also follow the interstate.
Once completed, the I-90 bridge will be the “only floating bridge carrying rail lines in the world.” Approved by voters in 2008, a segment of the East Link will carry people from Seattle into Overlake, and beyond into Redmond (approved expansion in 2016.)
Though for now, the I-90 reversibly bridge is closed to allow construction, it will ease ride times and allow swifter passage from Mercer Island to both Bellevue and Seattle.
