As we all know, Seattle has so many mouthwatering restaurants, that you’d never run out! But, sometimes we just want snacks, and local Seattle bakeries harbor some of the most delicious pastries we’ve ever had!

Google searches for local baked goods continues to skyrocket, year after year – sort of like the current local real estate market. As more and more people are indulging in local baked goods, more and more boutique bakeries pop up.

This is our own “short list” of hidden (and let’s be real, not-so-hidden) bakeries around Seattle.

Probably one of Seattle’s worst kept secrets, is Bakery Nouveau. Though there are a few locations around Seattle, we’ve enjoyed the Capitol Hill location on several occasions. From daily-made sandwiches to homemade breakfast pastries, fresh bread, plus holiday and seasonal delights.  They’re in Burien, West Seattle, and Capitol Hill, so indulge in their range of products.

A humble and whimsical bakery, the Dahlia Bakery can be found in the Belltown neighborhood of Seattle. Though they can complete your every baked-good need, they specialize and have been world-renowned for their Triple Coconut Cream Pie. Try their artisan breads, homemade pastries, and delightful cakes, full of fresh ingredients and local heart.

Local and baked with the heart, the Sod House Bakery offers beautiful creations from cinnamon rolls and croissants, to hand pies and sandwich cookies. Specializing in creations made with local ingredients from sustainable sources, their cookies, pies, and other baked goods are delicious, and they offer an amazing place for community.

Off 24th Avenue in Ballard, you’ll find a small bakery, called Tall Grass Bakery. Referred to as the “BEST… THE NUMBER ONE” in Seattle, this little bakery has had lines around the block several times. Completely organic and hand-forged, these “hot for you” breads are scrutinized to the highest caliber, and use only the finest quality of ingredients available.

Family owned, craft bakery, Sea Wolf Bakery has made its mark on the Seattle baked-goods scene. Created from brothers, who use only the best practices of local sourcing and skillful craftsmanship, they found their own piece of the city in August of 2016, after years of using borrowed kitchens around Seattle.

New to the neighborhood, this pretty bakery opened just a few weeks ago (2017), with carefully crafted pastries, breads, sandwiches, and crepes – paired with fine wine and espresso, to boot! Located in Northern Beacon Hill, Fresh Flours offers the finest quality of pastries and coffee. While it began as a dream, it’s since morphed into some of the most unique and expertly developed baked-goods recipes, including flavors like green tea, sesame, and azuki.

These Seattle neighborhoods took the cake 2017, and are starting strong with staggering figures in January 2018. Overall, the Greater Seattle Region has seen increasingly low inventory, raising home prices and heightening competition for homes – and while these issues aren’t unique to Seattle, we are experiencing it most prevalently.

Seattle has grown in several areas in the past year, including the grand reopening of our beloved Pike Place Market and the 2018 reopening of the highly anticipated remastering of the Seattle Space Needle – and the city towers are growing right alongside other areas of economic growth. But, which areas have growth more than others, in terms of home price or bang for your buck? We’ve compiled a list of Seattle great-growth neighborhoods in Seattle’s not-so sleep streets.

Neighborhood #5 NORTH SEATTLE, with an average of 14.3% increase.

Laurelhurst is a coveted residential neighborhood in northeast Seattle near the University of Washington (UW) and Seattle Children’s Hospital. Waterfront homes enjoy frontage on Union Bay, a part of Lake Washington. The Laurelhurst Beach Club (private) and Laurelhurst Community Center (public) are popular community hubs while nearby University Village offers a hip shopping, dining and social venue for residents and UW students alike. To the north, Wedgwood (map), is a more modest local neighborhood that is undergoing much transition as homeowners rebuild or remodel its predominantly 1950’s homes to transform them into modern and more functional structures suitable for today’s needs. Neighborhood #4 The greater BALLARD are, including neighborhoods such Fremont, Phinney Ridge, Ballard and Wallingford, averaging 14.6% home gains.

Ballard is one of the hippest and most coveted neighborhoods in Seattle. Its close proximity to the burgeoning tech industry in neighboring Fremont and reasonable access to the Eastside via 520 makes Ballard an extremely convenient place to call home. Located in the northwestern part of the city, Ballard houses a vibrant working waterfront and looks out upon Fisherman’s Terminal, the home base for the North Pacific Fishing Fleet. Neighborhood # 3 WEST SEATTLE saw a 17% increase from 2016.

West Seattle is aptly named—it represents all of the city located west of the Duwamish River. It is the birth place of Seattle, being the first place settlers established themselves. Gorgeous views from West Seattle of the Seattle skyline, Puget Sound, along with the Cascade and Olympic mountains, have contributed to residents’ love for the area and make this a favorite Puget Sound destination. Seattle is a town known for its music. From Sunny Day Real Estate, Mudhoney, and Soundgarden, to Nevermore, the Postal Service, Classic Crime, and Macklemore, Seattle offers a rich music scene from 90’s grunge to indie rock, progressive metal, and hip hop.

While it’s true that many of the venues are bars and geared towards 21+, some aren’t, allowing people of any age to enjoy their favorite musical varieties. This list goes over some of the many Seattle venues that local, touring, and visiting artists and bands call home.

Georgetown

A 21+ venue, Slim’s Last Change Chili Shack & Watering Hole features music throughout the month, though not every day. Stay up-to-date on their website, by visiting their shows page.

West Seattle

The city that could have been, West Seattle features the “beach life” with a short drive of bustling, downtown Seattle. The peninsula is a bit more laid back, than the busy populace of Seattle’s thriving business district – and has amazing views of the Puget Sound and Olympic Peninsula.

Touted as West Seattle’s premier music venue, the Skylark features music of every variety, including indie rock, pop, electronica, hard rock, metal, and jazz. Note: some of their features are 21+, but there are a ton that are all ages.

SODO

Both Showbox venues (the Market and SODO) always bring a crowd. The SODO venue features its original beauty as a converted warehouse and has feature articles such as Heart and Taking Back Sunday.

Studio 7 proves and multi-faceted space, featuring artists throughout the week ranging from metal to hip hop to electronica. Their space includes their main club, dual level showroom, and 16 band rehearsal rooms.

Easily one of the largest venues in the area, the Washington Music Theater (WaMu Theater), has featured bands such as Slayer, Kid Cudi, and various music festivals. Their expansive space offers a variety of options from standing, sitting, and hanging out near refreshments if you need a break.

Columbia City

Over Beacon Hill, you’ll find a neighborhood known as Columbia City – and the Columbia City Theater. With the theater in back and the Bourbon Bar in from, this venue features an eclectic history and a past lineup just as varied.

With music seven days every week, the Royal Room was designed to serve the musicians and artists it hosts, and likewise offers an emphasis on creative programming and development and working collaboratively in a community space.

Pioneer Square

Moving north in Pioneer Square, you’ll want to stop by the Central Saloon. With a history for over 120 years, the Central Saloon not features “the best live rock seven nights a week,” 365 days per year.

Downtown

Showbox Market is a beautiful art-deco style entertainment spot, with a full bar separate from the floor. Still displaying music for over 75 years, the Showbox Market has proved itself a mainstay in the Seattle music scene.

The HardRock Café near Downtown, Seattle often features live music on their second-floor venue.

The Triple Door is a beautiful music + eating venue. The front offers a delight dining area, while music patrons can sit and eat as they watch a variety of music, featuring artists such as Kaki King and Glockabelle.

The Seattle Theatre Group comprises the Paramount, Moor, and Neptune theaters.

Located under the Alaskan Way Viaduct, the Highway 99 Blues Club features a 21+ venue and combines the feelings of “southern juke joint”, with that of “old timey” architecture and concept.

Belltown and the Denny Triangle

These two areas are wonderful for bustling around town, and proves Seattle’s 4th most walkable and bikeable districts, according to Walkscore.com.

Offering a variety of daily delights, the Crocodile is touted on Paste Magazine’s list of top 40 music venues in the United States. Back in its years in the 1990’s, it was a swift ride to fame, as it featured many emerging and heavily popular bands throughout the grunge scene.

Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley is highly regarded amongst Seattle Jazz venues, featuring nightly shows, largely comprising jazz ensembles, pianists, vocalists, and guitarists.

Another stop along the Jazz train, it Tula’s Jazz Club, featuring jazz seven nights a week, plus “great Northwest and American cuisine.”

The Rendezvous Jewelry Box Theater remains an intimate venue, restored to its original 1932 beauty and offers live music and burlesque. Check out either the Jewelry Box or Grotto for daily entertainment!

Many mega-performers come through the Key Arena at Seattle Center, including bands such as Nine Inch Nails, Explosions in the Sky, Queens of the Stoneage, and many other popular artists.

Capitol Hill & South Lake Union

Amongst the best of Seattle’s urban charm, these two typical “Seattleite” neighborhoods are booming with eateries, bars, cafes, boutiques, and entertainment venues. Regardless of where you live, you’re only a short walk away from fun!

Neumos is another eclectic bar + venue, featuring bands such as the Raconteurs, Cannibal Corpse, Iron & Wine, Mudhoney, and a variety of others. They offer three full bars, a second-floor mezzanine, and a balcony overlooking the mainstage.

Though their bookings trend into metal and punk territory, the Highline has been a longstanding, Broadway venue, featuring a food and drink menu.

Another not-always 21+ venue, is Chop Suey. They offer a variety of tastes in music and cuisine (check out their menu!)

El Corazon and the Funhouse strive to provide the “ultimate concert and social experience,” while their staff focus on “excellent customer service and artist relations.” Enjoy a show. Chat with friends. Have a drink.

10 Shopping Centers of the Greater Seattle Region

We’re getting into the best (or worst) time for seasonal shopping, and although there is much you can purchase online, stores are creating sales and pre-sales to combat their dwindling retail shop industry. It can also be a good time to verify sale prices and stock up on things that are typically more expensive throughout the year!

These 11-local shopping center are great for getting out of the house, or finding that last wish list item.

In the center of Downtown Seattle, you’d fine the massive shopping district, including Westlake Center, Pacific Place and surrounding buildings, housing retailors, such as Nordstrom, Macy’s, and Nike’s Seattle location. Westlake Center is a 4-story, glass-enclosed shopping center, that includes tons of eateries and retailors, while Pacific Place is a small mall, offering Seattle’s premier boutiques.

Nestled between the University District and Seattle’s Laurelhurst neighborhood, you’ll find the University Village Shopping Center. This largely outdoor shopping area has been beautifully designed to incorporate the experience of shopping with the quaint shops that call this “Village” home. Comprised of dozens of retailors, including glassybaby and Mercer & Co., this mall offers ample parking and is within walking distance to public transportation and various Seattle neighborhoods.

Further north, in the Northgate neighborhood, you’ll find Northgate Mall. A Simon Mall, Northgate offers a variety of retailors and boutiques, including Macy’s and Forever XXI. Though Northgate in and of itself is of substantial size, encompassing over 130 stores, its proximity to the Regal Cinemas at Thorton Place and the Northgate North building only adds to the opportunity.

Moving further north, towards Lynnwood, you’ll find the newly reimagined Alderwood Mall and surrounding shopping centers. Touted as Snohomish County’s largest mall, this mall comprises over 165 stores and 1.5 million square feet of retail space. The space went through major renovations in the early 2000s and it remains a major mall for north end dwellers.

Redmond’s dual-level, outdoor shopping mall offers tons of beauty and opportunity for consumers. Offering more than 110 shops restaurants, lodging and entertainment options, Redmond Town Center comprises six buildings, most of the shopping in the main hub of Center Street Plaza and the Macy’s and REI buildings.

The bustling city of Bellevue, offers three malls, including the Bellevue Collection and Bellevue Square Mall, Crossroads Bellevue, and Factoria Mall. Though technically not the largest in Washington, Bellevue Square Mall does offer 1.3 million square feet of retail space and comprises over 180 stores. It’s adjoining buildings, such as Lincoln Square, offer more opportunity for dining and play. Bell-Square, as local call it, is known for its high-end retailors, including Armani Exchange and Hugo Boss.

Both Crossroads Bellevue and the Marketplace at Factoria are considerably smaller than other local malls, but they both have a lot to offer. Crossroads is a plethora of culture and eating, surrounded by family-friendly fun, exercise facilities, and retailors, including Old Navy, Pier 1 Imports, and Daiso Japan. The Marketplace at Factoria offers retailors such as Target, the Nordstrom Rack, and Old Navy, but they also have a ton of surrounding eateries and shops.

The Marketplace at Factoria is located a block away from Newport High School, Crossroads is approximately 1.5-miles from Bellevue’s Interlake High School, and the Bellevue Collection is less than a mile from Bellevue High School. These close proximities make these malls a go-to for after school activities and gettogethers.

The Westfield-Southcenter Mall, formerly known as Southcenter Mall, is the largest shopping center in Washington State and the Pacific Northwest. Comprising over 215 stores and 1.7 million square feet of retail space, Westfield Mall offers a wide array of shopping opportunities from food and clothing, to beauty and home décor.

Federal Way’s regional shopping mall, offers over 90 stores, full-service restaurant, and arcade, and cineplex! As Federal Way’s only mall, the Commons at Federal Way and its surrounding plazas offer the majority of the area’s shopping.

Down the hill into Auburn, you’ll find another massive shopping center, known as the Outlet Collection Seattle and remains the largest outlet mall in the Pacific Northwest. Comprised of 140 stores and about 945,000 square feet of retail space, the Outlet Collection has gone through major additions and renovations since the early 2000s, including a half-dozen strip malls.

Remarkably noted as a “hidden gem” close to the city, this Shoreline beach park is great for discovering critters on the beach, getting in a good sweat, and sunset views across the sound. 12 of Our Favorite Trail-Parks Within Seattle, Washington

Last week was the calm before the storm, so to speak. We’re up for a brutal week, weather wise, but why not take advantage of the sun, heat, and lack of water dripping from the sky? Seattle is brimming with outdoorsy activities, and one of those activities are trails. Whether you’re looking for a long or short trail or a beautiful or private trail a Seattle park is only a short drive away.

These twelve easy and awesome hikes accommodate not only walkers, but runners and bicyclists, too!

Carkeek Park offers 220 acres of lush forests, meadows, creeks, wetlands, and dozens of intertwining trails, including South Bluff Trail, Hillside Trail, Pipers Creek Trail, North Traverse, and the South Ridge Trail. Plenty of parking along the street leading towards the water, as well as a play area and beach access. It’s always surprising to check out the low tide critters!

Warren G. Magnuson Park doesn’t have oodles of trails, but they do have a few that run the length of the park, through the wetlands and towards the beach. At roughly 350 acres, the park is noted as Seattle’s second largest park and is known for its array of amenities. Though it only has four miles of trails, it still beats our next installment, and it coupled with beauty, beaches, and activity!

The Burke-Gilman Trail is another popular trail in Seattle. Disclaimer: though it starts in Seattle, it ends in Bothell (or vice versa depending on how you look at it.) This 18.8-mile stretch is well-maintained asphalt starting near Seattle’s Golden Gardens and ending near the Sammamish River Trail.

Greenlake & Woodland Parks are across a very small street from each other. A loop around Greenlake Park is 2.8 miles, but you can supplement that walk with the trails in Woodland Park. Both areas are stunningly breathtaking, with sparkling views of Greenlake and its surrounding beauty. Woodland Park even has an off-leash dog park for puppies, but, don’t worry, you can take them on the loop with you too!

The best (in my opinion) park for trails within the Seattle limits is Discovery Park. For any activity level, Discovery Park has an area in which you’ll thrive. A 534-acre natural park, it rests as Seattle’s largest park and encompasses much of the entirety of Magnolia’s Northwestern peak. Many of the trails are accessible from the main road, Discovery Park Boulevard, and the loops of Washington and California Avenue. Though the main Discovery Park Loop Trail in only 2.8 miles, dozens of other trails can easily bump that number.

The Elliott Bay Trail runs along the Seattle waterfront, starting at Terminal 91 along the waterfront and extends 3.4 miles towards Smith Cove and ends near Smith Cove Park. A wonderfully maintained asphalt trail is easily accessed and heavily trafficked by bicyclists, walkers, and runners alike.

Capitol Hill’s Volunteer Park is 40 acres of urban beauty. Historical buffs will enjoy the Observatory and Asian Art Museum (temporarily closed, 2017 – anticipated reopening, 2019), while runners, bicyclists, and walkers will enjoy the main loop and astounding landscaping. The East Highland Drive Trail is the mail trail on the West side boundary, while several other unnamed trails can be utilized throughout the area.

I know you’ve been waiting for the beautiful Washington Park Arboretum trails. Two main trails run North-South through the length of the Washington Park Arboretum, including Azalea Way and Arboretum Drive East. Though these are the main trails, other trails, such as the East Arboretum Trail and Arboretum Aqueduct, intersect between the two main arterial.

Moving further south, the Genesee Park and Playfields (lower & upper) offer wonderful neighborhood trails. Though only about a mile of trail, the park offers various other amenities, including being a staple to the neighborhood’s sports activities. Well-maintained and relatively flat, these trails are optimal for beginners, but great at every level.

Lake Washington is a spectacular beauty in the Pacific Northwest, and well-used for swimming, fishing, boating, and all other water activities. On the shores stretching from Colman to Seward Park you’ll find the Lake Washington Boulevard Trail. This 4.9-mile out and back tail is moderately trafficked, yet excellently maintained and accessible year-round. Though this trail connects the two parks, it doesn’t have to end there!

Seward Park is its own kind of splendor and natural brilliance. This 300-acre peninsula extends into Lake Washington and is home to many wonderful opportunities, such as boating, swimming, community activities, trailing, walking, running, biking, and so much more. A 2.4-mile bike/walk/running path circles the majority of the park, while trails, such as Spine Trail, Lost Lake Trail, Erratic Trail, and Huckleberry Trail, among others, wind through the forests of Seward Park.

Last on our stop today, is the beloved Alki Beach. The Alki Trail is a 5.5-mile trail that extends from Alki Avenue SW & 65th Ave SW and the West Seattle Bridge. This asphalt trail offers beautiful city views of the Seattle skyline, the Elliot Bay, and, towards the end, Puget Sound views to the west into the Olympic Mountain Range.

While there are dozens more inner-city trails to choose from, these are our local favorites! Whether you’re in the north end or south end, there’s a trail only a few blocks from your front door.
