4 of Madrona’s “Best Kept Secrets”

4 of Madrona’s “Best Kept Secrets”

Madrona is touted as “Seattle’s best kept secret” and is known for breathetaking views of the sparkling Lake Washington, quiet neighborhoods, and nature Northwest beauty. But, underneath it all, what’s it really hiding?

Along the shores of Madrona’s Lake Washington patch, is where it starts. A large and grassy beach and swimming area, with lifeguards during the Summer season, is an excellent place for a picnic, lounge, or dog walk. The size makes it a great place for large, family gatherings, or people looking for some alone-time. A little further south and the Lake Washington Dock jets out into, you guessed it, Lake Washington.

From the beach, navigate the not-so subtle incline of Madrona Park. This hillside park offers trails, nature walks, and beautiful views across the water. Though the trails aren’t long, it’s well-kept and proves a great workout!

Travel a little further west and you’ll find the adorable Madrona “downtown” district. Local favorites, like Molly Moon’s, Cupcake Royale, and the Madrona Arms call this neighborhood home. And local candleholder company, glassybaby, uses this neighborhood as it’s headquarters. Imagine walking down a quiet street and watching the enthralling activity of glass blowing! Though their commercial area is small, it is lively and brimming with opportunity.

While much of the neighborhood is residential, it’s ideal location makes it convenient for city-dwellers searching for that suburban feel.

Seattle Community Park + New Listing

Seattle Community Park + New Listing

Seward Park is a beautiful 300-acre park, built around natural forest land, old growth forests, and is home to many resident eagle’s nests. Through its humble beginnings, this park has become a staple to its neighborhood, and hosts many events throughout the year.

Though the purchase of the Seward Park peninsula was proposed in 1892, the land wasn’t purchased until 1911, making the first years of the park development slow moving. When the Ship Canal was constructed, the now-lower Lake Washington exposed a grassy meadow along the now-swimming beach. In 1927, the bathhouse was constructed; fish ponds were built in 1935; in 1953, a Greek-style amphitheater was hollowed out on the south hillside and, for many years, became a scene of lavish orchestra, chorus, and dance productions.

Full of community amenities, this park boasts a 2.4 mile lakeside biking and walking path; a native plant garden; an art studio; miles of hiking trails through the old growth forest; shoreline beaches, canoeing, and swimming; various close-by boat launch options; children jungle gym; various picnic and BBQ sites; tennis courts, and plenty of parking.

The park is also home to the Seattle Park Environmental & Audubon Center – previously known as the Seward Park Inn (renovation completed in 2008). The center provides programming for the park including, school, youth, community, arts in the environment, and special events. There are also exhibits, a library, a laboratory, and a humble gift shop!

A 2017 renovation will see the possible creation of a new torri gate, “to replace the one that stood at the entrance to Seward Park fifty years prior to its removal in 1986.”
